I had a very eye-catching booth at the Catalyst Career Forum on Friday and Saturday, and signed lots of copies of Ask Caroline. It was fun!

Just got back from reading a Halloween story to the children at Summerhill. It was really good fun! Now I have to get all this green stuff off my face and make myself presentable before heading off to the Catalyst MBA Career Forum! Drop by and say hi!

I’ve got a special campaign going on Twitter today. I’ve decided today is Free Book Friday, and I’m giving away copies of Ask Caroline to people who follow me before midday. You can find me at CaroNeeSan.

I’m getting ready for Friday’s seminar for Japanese people!
We will firstly talk about the basics of how to behave in an international environment. There are a couple of important differences with how Japanese and Western people interact, that are easy for Japanese people to learn. We will go through those things together.
We will also look at what an international lifestyle is and why the participants want to have one. I always think it is important to be aware of reasons for desiring any change in your life. I’m looking forward to hearing about people’s motivations for incorporating international elements to their life.
For the main part of the introductory seminar we will go through five different areas of our lives—practical (money, clothes, beauty, home, and travel), physical (health—conventional and alternative), professional (careers and colleagues), educational (hobbies and learning), interpersonal (relationships, romantic and platonic, both here and overseas), and emotional (self-confidence and any personal issues). We will look at these five areas and identify real goals participants can incorporate into their lives right away.
And everybody gets a signed copy of the BAB book or the schools guidebook, which will give them plenty more ideas on how to incorporate international elements into their lives, or those of their family members. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone on Friday!

When I first came to Japan I taught at an alternative Japanese international school. I loved working there.
I became especially close to one student, when she asked me to coach her for an English speech-making competition. She wrote an excellent speech on enjokosai—a very controversial topic to talk about. My student, Ai, did an excellent job of giving the speech, and we became closer over the years, and more like friends as she got older. She was a very talented artist and I asked her to illustrate one of my books—years later she confided to me that the cover illustration she had created was in fact supposed to be me!
During the World Cup here in 2002, she met a British football photojournalist, and eventually moved to the UK. Last Saturday night, Ai and Daniel celebrated their May wedding here in Japan, in the middle of their year-long honeymoon around the world.
It was such a thrill to see them both—she always makes me feel just a little bit tearful because I am so full of pride and love for her. I’m so honoured to have been her teacher. Congratulations Ai and Daniel!
